‘Education Nation’ summit highlights dropout epidemic

A New York City summit hosted by television network NBC this week examined the state of education in America as government officials, educators and other sought solutions for a wide range of issues.

Among the topics discussed at the 2-day summit in Rockefeller Center was the country’s staggering dropout rate of more than 1 million students every year – 7,000 a day.

“The whole education system is not broken, but there are roughly 2,000 schools in America that are broken,” said Gen. Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State who, along with his wife, Alma, headlined the event.

The summit’s Web site can be found at www.educationnation.com.
