Are you losing students to diploma mills?

Teachers and administrators who are fighting to keep their students in school aren't just struggling against economic, social, cultural forces.

They're also fighting a Siren's song of diploma mills like this one.

"Our non-traditional, motivational and accelerated format enables completion in just hours or days at your own pace with no classes required!" the St. Kitts-based, non-accredited Jefferson High School promises. "GET STARTED TODAY."

Many students — and particularly those who might be having trouble finishing high school the old-fashioned way — may not realize the consequences of doing business with a diploma mil.

"While the Internet facilitates learning through online curriculum, it also makes it easier for scammers to shill their phony high school diplomas and college degrees,” said Steve Cox, a spokesman for the Better Business Bureau.

But the Internet also makes it easier than ever before to identify fake diplomas, leaving students who think they can benefit from such scams out of luck when it comes to job interviews, military enlistment and college enrollment.
